Assisting with a new approach to parenting
I believe that parents are being called to a different way of parenting: Parenting that is in tune with what every child needs; in short, mindful parenting.
Mindfulness can be defined as “being conscious or aware of something; or a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”
The Fairy Caravan story club is focused on teaching children mindful ways of overcoming the stumbling blocks that they have to overcome in the process of growing up.
We aim to assist parents by offering the story club as a mindful parenting tool. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, we don't believe in eschewing all technology; rather we need to use technology in a mindful way.
The story club is accessible through devices such as a tablet or smartphone, but the stories still work their same magic when a parent reads them to a child at bedtime!
We are also busy working on releasing our stories in printed book format!
The stories serve as great conversation starters about the themes they address.
Most of the activities we offer are printable and require a bit of crafting with paper and glue. These activities have wonderful potential for bonding time between parent and child - or for the whole family!
Our story club is suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 8 years old.
I've been getting advice from play therapist Lenka De Villiers-Van Zyl about the difficulties that most children struggle with as they are growing up, and how to overcome these stumbling blocks. A recurring theme that emerged was the value of mindfulness approaches in overcoming a wide variety of problems that most children deal with.
I believe that stories are a wonderful way of explaining complex concepts to children. By sharing mindful methods of dealing with problems in easily understood stories, it is my aim to share coping skills that will serve a child throughout his/her entire lifetime.
The stories in our Story Club are not solely aimed at children in play therapy. They focus on issues that all children struggle with, for example, anxiety, nightmares, loneliness and dealing with anger.
In addition to the stories, we have also developed fun activities around each story and theme. These activities are designed to strengthen the parent-child bond as they sometimes require a little help from a parent to complete.
The stories and activities always encourage the development of a child’s imagination. Imagination is important because children cannot create or achieve anything before they can imagine it first!
