Safe space meditation to help an anxious child

Safe space meditation to help an anxious child

I've loved working on this safe space meditation, and I hope that you will find it helpful! I am a huge believer in the positive effects of meditation - even (or perhaps especially!) for young children.

When to use this meditation

This meditation can help an overwhelmed child find a calm and safe space in his or her imagination. You can use the meditation on its own, or with our book to help children with anxiety.

Anxious and/or introverted children have a tendency to feel overwhelmed or overstimulated by too much noise or activity. What often helps, is just spending some time in a quiet environment with few stimuli which can contribute to the sense of over stimulation.

A teacher could create a quiet corner in a classroom, separated from the rest of the room by a sheer curtain or netting, and fill it with pillows. It is also a great idea to create such a corner in a child's bedroom. This quiet corner can double up as a reading corner. (Where adults are allowed by invitation only!)

Different children will have different triggers for feeling this way, and for some, a few minutes of downtime will be enough, while another child may need a longer period to recover.

Children might find this meditation helpful, as the music is soothing and they can close their eyes and take a break from visual stimulation for a while.

My great gran isn’t particularly anxious but she responds well to your stories and anything to do with Kiki. Hope this new meditation finds its way to insight timer.
